While some higher education systems in the world are frequently the object of study in higher education research, there are also regions of which we do not only lack research on, but also lack basic data and information to start with. In this post, Hedda graduate Jelena Brankovic introduces a new project that has its aim to change this situation for Western Balkans by providing quality information and research about the region.

The project is jointly implemented by the Department of Educational Research of the Faculty of Educational Sciences (PFI) and the Centre for European Studies (ARENA) at the University of Oslo (Norway), the University of Zagreb (Croatia), the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Belgrade (Serbia) and the Norwegian Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU, Norway) and the Centre for Education Policy (Serbia).
The purpose of the Knowledge Base is to gather and systematize information and data on higher education and research in the Western Balkan countries, i.e. Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo (under UNSCR 1244), Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, and to act as a resource base for researchers, policy makers, as well as other stakeholders, such as higher education institutions, students, general public etc., from the Western Balkans and beyond.
The Knowledge Base consists of the following five complementary components: Database (quantitative data), Library (reports, studies, articles, regulation and other documents), Blog (contributors’ reflection and comment), In Focus (news section) and Links (useful web sources on the relevant topics).
The Knowledge Base is currently a single “knowledge hub” for higher education and research in the Western Balkan region, with the ambition to become a unique place where data, knowledge and information meet and are taken a step further, both by researchers and policy makers.
